Roofing Square Calculator

Convert roof area into roofing squares, square feet, square meters and square yards. Add an optional waste allowance and see your net area and planning total separately.

Four area units Separate waste allowance No account required

Enter your roof area

Use actual surface area

Enter roof surface area, not length or house floor area. Changing the input unit converts the current valid value. This tool does not apply a roof-pitch adjustment.

Set allowance:

The 10% default is an example, not a recommendation. Choose an allowance appropriate to your material and roof layout. If your input already includes waste, use 0% to avoid adding it twice.

This calculation runs in your browser. Your measurement inputs are not submitted to a server by this tool.

Three simple steps

How to calculate roofing squares

01 / ENTER

Start with surface area.

Enter the roof’s measured or calculated sloped surface area. Select the unit that matches your number. Do not use a length measurement.

02 / ALLOW

Add waste only once.

Set a separate allowance for your planning estimate. If your starting area already includes waste, leave the allowance at zero.

03 / REVIEW

Read the converted totals.

Compare roofing squares, square feet, square meters and square yards. Keep net area separate from the total including waste.

Understand the unit

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is an area of 100 square feet. A 10 ft × 10 ft surface is one roofing square, but the surface does not have to be square-shaped.

One roofing square equals exactly 9.290304 square meters using the international foot. It is also approximately 11.1111 square yards.

Roofing squares = square feet ÷ 100
Square feet = roofing squares × 100
Square meters = square feet × 0.09290304
Square feet = square yards × 9
Added waste = net area × waste % ÷ 100
Total area = net area + added waste

Example: 2,500 sq ft with 10% waste

2,500 ÷ 100 = 25 roofing squares. A 10% allowance adds 250 sq ft, or 2.5 squares. The total becomes 2,750 sq ft, equal to 27.5 roofing squares.

Common questions

Roofing squares,
without the confusion.

Understand how area units relate to roof measurements and material planning.

How many square feet are in one roofing square?

One roofing square contains 100 square feet. Divide a roof’s square footage by 100 to calculate the equivalent number of roofing squares.

How many roofing squares is a 2,000 sq ft roof?

A roof surface of 2,000 square feet equals 20 roofing squares before waste. With an example 10% allowance, the planning total is 2,200 square feet, or 22 roofing squares.

Does 2,000 sq ft of floor area mean 20 roofing squares?

Not necessarily. House floor area is not the same as roof surface area. Roof pitch, overhangs, roof shape and the number of building stories affect the relationship. Calculate roof surface area before converting it to squares.

Is a roofing square the same as a shingle bundle?

No. A square is an area unit, while a bundle is a package of shingles. Coverage per bundle varies by product. Use the manufacturer’s stated coverage when calculating how many bundles to purchase.

Should I round roofing squares up to a whole number?

Keep the unrounded area for your calculations. Round purchase quantities according to the package, sheet, panel or supplier order increment for your material. This calculator does not automatically round up to whole squares.

Does this tool include roof pitch?

No. It converts an area you already know. If your measurements describe a horizontal footprint, use the roof area calculator to apply pitch first. Then convert the resulting surface area here.

Why did my area number change when I selected another unit?

The calculator converts the current valid input to the new unit while keeping the represented area the same. For example, 2,500 square feet becomes 25 roofing squares. Press Calculate to update the results.

Should I add waste if my previous estimate already included it?

No. Set the additional allowance to 0% if your input already includes waste. For a clear net-versus-waste breakdown, enter the original net roof area instead.
