Start with surface area.
Enter the roof’s measured or calculated sloped surface area. Select the unit that matches your number. Do not use a length measurement.
Convert roof area into roofing squares, square feet, square meters and square yards. Add an optional waste allowance and see your net area and planning total separately.
This calculation runs in your browser. Your measurement inputs are not submitted to a server by this tool.
Enter an area to calculate.
Results are area conversions. They are not counts of shingle bundles, roofing sheets or material packages.
| Measurement | Net area | Added waste | Total |

Displayed figures are rounded. Calculations use unrounded values. Purchase quantities need product-specific coverage and package rounding.
Planning estimate only. Verify the measured roof surface area and your product’s coverage before ordering materials.
Enter the roof’s measured or calculated sloped surface area. Select the unit that matches your number. Do not use a length measurement.
Set a separate allowance for your planning estimate. If your starting area already includes waste, leave the allowance at zero.
Compare roofing squares, square feet, square meters and square yards. Keep net area separate from the total including waste.
A roofing square is an area of 100 square feet. A 10 ft × 10 ft surface is one roofing square, but the surface does not have to be square-shaped.
One roofing square equals exactly 9.290304 square meters using the international foot. It is also approximately 11.1111 square yards.
2,500 ÷ 100 = 25 roofing squares. A 10% allowance adds 250 sq ft, or 2.5 squares. The total becomes 2,750 sq ft, equal to 27.5 roofing squares.
| Squares | Square feet | Square meters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | 9.29 |
| 5 | 500 | 46.45 |
| 10 | 1,000 | 92.90 |
| 15 | 1,500 | 139.35 |
| 20 | 2,000 | 185.81 |
| 25 | 2,500 | 232.26 |
| 30 | 3,000 | 278.71 |
| 40 | 4,000 | 371.61 |
| 50 | 5,000 | 464.52 |
Square-meter figures in this chart are rounded to two decimals. The calculator uses the full conversion factor.
Understand how area units relate to roof measurements and material planning.
One roofing square contains 100 square feet. Divide a roof’s square footage by 100 to calculate the equivalent number of roofing squares.
A roof surface of 2,000 square feet equals 20 roofing squares before waste. With an example 10% allowance, the planning total is 2,200 square feet, or 22 roofing squares.
Not necessarily. House floor area is not the same as roof surface area. Roof pitch, overhangs, roof shape and the number of building stories affect the relationship. Calculate roof surface area before converting it to squares.
No. A square is an area unit, while a bundle is a package of shingles. Coverage per bundle varies by product. Use the manufacturer’s stated coverage when calculating how many bundles to purchase.
Keep the unrounded area for your calculations. Round purchase quantities according to the package, sheet, panel or supplier order increment for your material. This calculator does not automatically round up to whole squares.
No. It converts an area you already know. If your measurements describe a horizontal footprint, use the roof area calculator to apply pitch first. Then convert the resulting surface area here.
The calculator converts the current valid input to the new unit while keeping the represented area the same. For example, 2,500 square feet becomes 25 roofing squares. Press Calculate to update the results.
No. Set the additional allowance to 0% if your input already includes waste. For a clear net-versus-waste breakdown, enter the original net roof area instead.
