Measure beyond the roof surface

Flat Roof Membrane Calculator

Estimate membrane area and rolls for your roof, including vertical upstands and additional detailing. Add waste, deduct matching rolls in stock and calculate a material subtotal.

✓ Roof and upstand areas ✓ Metric or imperial units ✓ Roll quantity and cost

Enter your membrane measurements

Area-based estimate for one membrane product and layer. Enter only areas using this same material and coverage rate.

Use the actual surface receiving membrane, excluding vertical upstands entered below.
Enter only vertical surfaces covered by this membrane. Use one common height. The 0.3 m default is an example, not a required installation height. To exclude upstands, set both upstand inputs to 0.
Add separately measured returns or other details using the same membrane. Include only areas not already counted above. Use 0 if none.
Coverage after specified laps. The starting 20 m² is illustrative; replace it with your product’s net coverage.
For cuts and handling beyond laps already included in usable coverage. The default is an example.
Count only full rolls with the same coverage and specification. Partial rolls are not included.
Quantity estimate, not a membrane layout. This tool does not arrange seams, optimize cuts, size a single-piece sheet or calculate liquid coating quantities. It assumes the same usable roll coverage applies to all entered areas. Calculate separate detail products or layers individually.
Account for every surface

How to estimate flat roof membrane

01 / MAIN ROOF

Measure the roof surface

Add the areas receiving this membrane. For irregular shapes, divide the surface into measurable sections and combine their areas without double-counting.

02 / EDGES AND DETAILS

Add upstands and returns

Multiply the total vertical upstand length by its coverage height. Add other separately measured details only when they use the same membrane and coverage basis.

03 / ROLL QUANTITY

Apply usable roll coverage

Enter coverage after specified laps, choose an additional waste allowance and deduct matching stock. Review the estimate against your planned membrane layout.

Membrane calculation formula

Upstand area
= total upstand length × coverage height

Total net area
= main roof area + upstand area + additional detailing area

Target area
= total net area × (1 + additional waste ÷ 100)

Required rolls
= round up(target area ÷ usable coverage per roll)

Rolls to purchase
= maximum(0, required rolls − matching stock)

Use a coverage rate appropriate to the planned installation. This calculation does not derive lap dimensions or determine the waterproofing system.

Example: roof with vertical upstands

Consider a 100 m² roof, with 40 m of upstands covered to 0.3 m, and 2 m² of additional details. These dimensions are illustrative.

Upstand area = 40 × 0.3 = 12 m²
Net area = 100 + 12 + 2 = 114 m²
With 10% waste = 114 × 1.10 = 125.4 m²
At 20 m² usable coverage per roll:
Required rolls = round up(125.4 ÷ 20) = 7
With 2 matching rolls in stock, purchase 5 rolls.

Seven rolls provide 140 m² of entered usable coverage. The estimated 14.6 m² above the target results from rounding the order to whole rolls.

Plan with the right assumptions

Flat roof membrane calculator questions

How much membrane do I need for a flat roof?

Add the main roof area, the vertical upstand area and any other details using the same membrane. Apply your additional waste allowance, then divide by usable coverage per roll and round up. Check the quantity against the actual layout.

Should I enter the entire roof perimeter as upstand length?

Enter only the total length of vertical surfaces that will receive this membrane at the stated height. An open edge with no vertical membrane coverage should not be included as an upstand.

What if the upstands have different heights?

Calculate each section’s length multiplied by its coverage height, then add those areas together. Set both upstand inputs here to zero and include the combined area in additional detailing. Avoid counting it again elsewhere.

Does this calculate seam or overlap widths?

No. Enter usable roll coverage after the specified laps have been accounted for. Additional waste should cover separate losses such as cuts and handling, not the same overlap loss twice.

Can this size a single-piece membrane sheet?

No. An area total cannot establish the length and width of a single-piece sheet. That requires the roof dimensions, edge allowances and the supplier’s available sheet sizes. This tool estimates rolls using usable area coverage.

Can I use it for EPDM, TPO, PVC or bituminous membrane?

The arithmetic can estimate roll quantities when you supply a suitable usable coverage value for your selected product and installation. It does not determine material suitability or compare waterproofing systems. Calculate each layer and different product separately.

Does it work for liquid roof coatings?

No. Liquid products need a consumption or coverage rate based on the specified application. This tool calculates membrane rolls, not liquid volume or coating thickness.

Does the result include adhesive and installation costs?

No. The optional subtotal covers purchased rolls only. Accessories, labor, delivery and taxes are excluded. The currency selector labels the entered price without converting exchange rates.
